Our Guild was very excited with the theme and colors chosen for the 2018 QuiltCon Charity Quilt. As our group is very much in tune with modern traditional quilts, we decided to go ahead and make a quilt to send to QuiltCon. I was chosen to take the lead on the project and the planning began as I explored different designs.

In September I presented two design ideas to the guild and one was selected. The chosen design was inspired from a line drawing in the quilt book “Drafting for the Creative Quilter” by Sally Collins published by C&T Publishing in 2010.

Over the summer I purchased several of the colors from all of the suggested fabric manufacturers and was excited to find that there was a difference in the colors based on the different manufacturers. This would give the quilt more color variety.

We approached a local quilt shop, Peach Tree Quilting, to donate or give us a discount on the neutral background fabrics needed. They happily agreed and supplied us with our background fabric at a discount.

I cut kits to distribute to members. A demo was done to show the members how to do rip less paper piecing. We used Eleanor Burn’s method to make the flying geese blocks and a template was included in the kits for trimming the blocks to the correct size. Several of the members sewed the blocks over the next month and a half. At our October Sew Day we completed the blocks and placed them on my loaned design wall.

Once the layout was perfect, we sewed the top together. I was surprised at how quickly the top went together once we all started to work on it. One of my favorite parts of the challenge was the strength of our groups dynamics and how well we worked together to get the project done.

I took the top home to quilt, bind, put the label on and mail it to QuiltCon. Once the quilt was done an email was sent out requesting a name for the quilt. One of the names submitted was 'Stars of Saskatchewan' by Gladys. We all liked it. The quilt was named.

This is the first quilt we have sent to QuiltCon and our group could not be happier with the results.

Our group has committed to give 10 quilts to the ten families in Phase 3 of the Habitat for Humanity Regina Project. This may be one of them but we would like to enter it in a local quilt show before making the final decision for the destination for our Charity Quilt.
